Only 2 days to go until EUROTOX Congress 2024! CEA can’t wait, and is licking its lips in anticipation of tucking into a feast of learning on the latest developments in the field of DART – that is, developmental and reproductive toxicity.
Developmental and reproductive toxicity (DART) is a complex regulatory endpoint that encompasses a number of diverse sub-endpoints including death, altered growth, functional deficit or deformity (tertaogenicity) of the foetus (developmental outcomes) and effects on sexual function or fertility (reproductive outcomes). Further myriad sub-divisions include, for example, foetal neurotoxicity, foetal organ-specific toxicity (functional deficits), low sperm counts in treated males (a fertility effect) and behavioural changes affecting mating performance (sexual function effects).
Sunday will bring a Continuing Education Course (CEC) banquet on the subject, and there will be snack- and bite-sized chunks spread throughout the EUROTOX 2024 programme in the form of full symposia and short oral sessions. By Wednesday afternoon CEA hopes to be fully up-to-date on which sub-endpoints in DART may be acceptable from a regulatory perspective, without using animals, the extent to which PB(P)K models can be used for estimating in utero exposures and exposures via breast milk, and whether thyroid disruption can be used to predict developmental neurotoxicity.
For dessert, we’re also looking forward to the post-EUROTOX 2024 workshop on “Dose level selection for Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology (DART) studies”.
