There are some hot topics which CEA will be following closely at EUROTOX, in the hope that we find out more in order that we can continue to provide our clients with first-class, cutting-edge advice. One of them is endocrine disruption (ED). Thyroid toxicity, which is one of the EATS (oestrogen, androgen, thyroid and steroidogenesis) receptor endpoints, will be covered at EUROTOX from a NAMs (new approach methodologies) perspective.
Can the appropriate use of NAMs, (Q)SARs (Quantitative structure-activity relationships) and read-across waive higher-tier animal testing? Certainly an affirmative answer may alleviate some of the concerns raised regarding information requirements put forward for ED assessment of chemicals under REACH (https://widgixeu-library.s3.amazonaws.com/library/90010302/PolicyOptions.pdf ). This data requirement, if implemented, will considerably increase the number of studies and overall cost incurred towards substance approval in the EU.
Therefore, there is hope that the European Commission will also provide a robust and transparent endocrine disruptor (ED) assessment process which fully implements the 3Rs (replacement, refinement, and reduction of the use of animals). While this topic is unfortunately not explicitly covered in the scientific programme at EUROTOX, hopefully this important subject will come up in discussions and through networking.
