A draft of the 7th renewal programme for active substances has been published by the EU Commission. This document describes the deadlines and applications for active substance renewals whose approval period ends between 31 March 2029 and 1 October 2035. In total, 68 active substances fall within AIR 7 and applications for renewal must be submitted no later than 3 years before the end of the approval period.

Environmental risk assessments for active substances, performed as part of the renewal process, often require higher tier solutions, either in terms of new data generation or re-interpretation of existing datasets. This can be exacerbated by implementation of new guidance documents since the last EU review, of which several are on the horizon e.g. bird and mammal guidance, bee guidance, and guidance on assessment of water treatment processes on active substances.

Here at CEA, we have a strong track record in developing higher-tier risk assessment solutions to support the agrochemical manufacturing industry. Our interdisciplinary risk assessment team, comprising environmental fate and exposure specialists together with ecotoxicology and risk assessment experts, are experienced in developing both desk-based and experimental solutions to regulatory problems. We can help design and monitor novel studies, including performing higher-tier aquatic ecotoxicology and field fate studies in-house. We have developed novel solutions for all manner of regulatory challenges, working with the client and regulators to find practical and robust ways forward.
