Regulatory Toxicologist

• • Kary has recently joined CEA in 2024 as a Regulatory Toxicologist. She has extensive experience in performing mammalian/human health toxicological risk assessments within the chemical regulatory framework, both in and outside of the EU regulatory system (for example,  REACH, K- REACH and KKDIK), with a speciality of in silico toxicology, (Q)SARs and building up read-across justification in accordance to the regulatory assessment framework (RAF), particularly in the petrochemical and industrial chemical sectors.

• • Kary began her career in toxicology in 2019 in a European-based consultancy, working with various REACH consortia on preparation of IUCLID dossiers, having worked on sections from physical chemistries and CLP hazard assessments, to environmental, ecotoxicological and mammalian toxicological information, in order to comply with regulatory requirements. During this time she has grown passionate about predictive toxicology. She followed closely the development of OECD Defined Approaches to be used within IATA and has provided consultations, particularly on UVCBs. She is committed to further her understanding and enhance her ability to contribute to the development of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) by pursing part-time education in bioinformatics.

• • Kary also has a robust background in academia and pharmaceutical industry. As research assistant at the national academy in Taiwan, Academia Sinica, she assisted with research on artificial bio-inspired metalloenzymes for efficient hydrogen production. Prior to that, she was a bench scientist at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

• • She has recognised the importance of networking for toxicologists in their early career and was a committee member for Network for Early-Stage Toxicologists (NEST) for the British Toxicology Society (BTS) for 2 years, assisting with event planning as well as podcast recording with renowned toxicologists. Kary holds a master’s degree in chemistry from University of Leicester, with a bonus year spent aboard in the “rubber capital of the world” in Ohio.
• • Outside of work, Kary is an avid reader, traveller, and (somewhat of) an amateur scuba diver.
